TEAM 15 LOSES AGAINST SUSSEX WITH HEADS HELD HIGH
Oxfordshire's Under 15 Badminton Squad made the long journey to Brighton on Sunday 21st February to take on a very strong and accomplished Sussex Under 15 Shires squad.
Ben Eggington and Jordan Beardmore stepped in at the last minute to replace George and Harry Brewis who were unable to attend.
The boy's consisted of Ben Isaacs, Sam Stroudley, Andrew Brockie , Ben Egginton and Jordan Beardmore whilst the girls were represented by Amy Lawson, Jade Brathwaite, Ella Kemp and Alice Atkins.
In a match where the final score did not reflect the effort of the Oxfordshire players, Sussex won 17-3.
The first win for Oxford came in the Mixed Doubles where Sam and Ella secured a 19-21;18-21 win against Thomas Kettle and Rachel Fenner.
Oxford's second win came in the boys' singles when Jordan Beardmore demonstrated sheer tenacity when he fought all the way to overcome Anthony Barnett for a 19-21; 20-22 win. Ben Isaacs and Sam Stroudley maintained their doubles form when they defeated Anthony Barnett and Sam Phillips 11-21;18-21.
Other notable performances were from Sam Stroudley who is a spirited game finally lost to Thomas Kettle 21-19 ; 16-21; 15-21.
Ben Egginton paired up with Jade Brathwaite and lost their first game 21-7 but fought back to a respectable 21-18 defeat.
Amy Lawson and Alice Atkins who continue to build on their doubles relationship lost 21-13;21-17and 21-16;21-18 in the level doubles and reverse doubles respectively.
Andrew Brockie demonstrated a determined performance against a strong Sam Phillips losing 21-13;21-15.
Player of the day however must go to Ella Kemp, who having played her "heart out" in her singles game was forced to halt due to illness but insisted on finishing her singles and subsequently continued on to her doubles pairing with Jade Brathwaite. Although losing 21-11;21-11 and 21-6;21-9, a fantastic effort in difficult circumstances.
Well done Ella.
Oxfordshire's U15 Secure Shires Win against Berkshire 14-6
Oxfordshire’s under 15 Badminton Squad started 2010 in stunning fashion with a remarkable 14- 6 victory over a well disciplined Berkshire U15 Squad. Whilst the guests were a pleasure to host, on the day they succumbed to the determination displayed by a hungry Oxfordshire squad.
The Oxfordshire Squad consisted of: Ben Isaacs; Harry and George Brewis; Sam Stroudley; Daniel Chen; Jade Brathwaite; Ella Kemp; Alice Atkins; Imogen and Edith Langford
The Mixed Double saw Ben Isaacs and Alice Atkins taken to a third game to win 19-21;21-15;21-13 against Jack Wills and Jessica Young.
Harry Brewis and Edith Langford continued their winning form with a 21-12;21-18 win against Frances Penny and George Williamson.
The SAM and ELLA Magic was maintained when Sam Stroudley and Ella Kemp romped to victory with a 21-10; 21-13 win against Anna Clark and Connor Cummings.
In the boy’s singles Ben Isaacs comfortably disposed of Jack Wills to win 21-17;21-12 while Harry Brewis maintained his winning form to defeat Connor Cummings 21-11;21-7. Maintaining the pattern of success, George Brewis took Josh Ryland-Langley to a 21-10;21-13 defeat whilst hot on his heels was Sam Stroudley repeating the performance to win 21-5;21-17 against George Williamson.
In the Girls singles Jade Brathwaite, Alice Atkins and Imogen Langford demonstrated fantastic determination but were outmatched by Jessica Young, Frances Penny and Savannah Hall respectively. Edith Langford dug deep to secure a consistent 21-12;21-12 victory over Anna Clark.
In the boy’s doubles Harry Brewis and Ben Isaacs were victorious to claim 21-16;21-15 against Wills and Ryland-Langley and a 21-11;21-16 win against Williamson and Cummings in the reverse doubles.
In his first Shires match of the season, Daniel Chen paired up with George Brewis secure a victory of 21-18;21-6 against Williamson and Cummings. The Match of the Day however, was their match against Wills and Ryland- Langley where both players produced an impressive nail biter to finally secure a 30-28;21-18 reverse doubles win.
The girls doubles was a fairly even affair with Jade Brathwaite and Ella Kemp losing 19-21; 11-21 against Young and Penny. Alice Atkins and Imogen Langford, having lost their first game 17-21, regained their composure and fought back to win the remaining two games 21-13;21-15. The reverse doubles saw Alice and Imogen involved in a tightly fought game where they finally succumbed to a 19-21; 18-21 defeat.
In what was the final game of the day, Ella Kemp and Jade Brathwaite, whilst being aware that all eyes were on them took the match to 3 games where they finally won 21-18; 18-21; 21-17 against Hall and Clark.
Despite a delayed start and with one court out of action, the Oxfordshire Squad stayed focused and secured a well deserved win.
Credit should also go to the Berkshire Squad who were a pleasure to host and demonstrated an accomplished sporting attitude.
InterCounty vs Hertfordshire, 17th January 2010
Oxon 1– Herts 19
Back in action after the snowy weather, the team faced a tough InterCounty match on Sunday, with many players feeling the effects of an extended Christmas break, and for some, the Surrey Bronze Tournament the previous day. In a reversal of recent form, Oxfordshire lost against a strong and aggressive Hertfordshire side, which included some well ranked bronze graded players. Despite having a number of our normal InterCounty squad out of action due to holidays or injury, everyone again worked hard to give their best on the day, but the match ended with Herts winning a creditable 19-1. The opponents’ strength in shots, court coverage and good communication between partners in doubles events was very evident.
The Oxfordshire team was joined by Will James and David Thomas for their first InterCounty action of the season. Both played with great spirit and real determination, managing to take one of their doubles matches to three games, before a narrow defeat in the end 14-21, 21-16, 16-21. Both boys can be very pleased with their debut against some tough opposition. For the girls, a tired Imogen and Edith battled well, with Imogen taking on a player she had completed against the previous day at Surrey. The girls took both their singles matches to three games, before achieving a well deserved win 21-17, 21-18 in the final doubles match of the day.
Overall, a tough match and a good reminder of the standard of badminton we should expect to face for the rest of the season.
U15 Gold Win - Sam Stroudley
Sam Stroudley came home from the U15 Bronze tournament in Surrey this weekend with a Gold medal. The tournament was well attended with over 90 boys entering. Sam won the semi-finals 21-16 against Graham Hutchings (So), and went on to win the tournament beating Chris Rawson (Sy). Well Done Sam !! - the U15 team now have 4 Silver players!
Oxfordshire v Dorset December 13th 2009th
Oxfordshire 5 - Dorset 15
Oxfordshire’s Under 15 A squad travelled to Bournemouth on Sunday to pitch their wits against a strong Dorset team where the hosts won 15 to 5. Whilst taking nothing away from the worthy winners, conditions were less than ideal with a venue that was particularly cold and courts that were extremely slippery. Shuttlecocks were deteriorating at a rate of one per game. The policy of taking a fifth player paid off after George Brewis was unable to participate due to injury. Andrew Brockie stepped into the breach in what was his second Shires outing to partner Jade Brathwaite. In a match that was their first double pairings, they lost 21-19 and 21-17 despite a worthy performance.
Sam Stroudley and Ella Kemp maintained their doubles relationship by performing the Sam & Ella magic to dispatch Dorset 21-18; 21-19 after Dorset won the first game 22-20. Imogen Langford justified her Shires debut by securing a doubles win 21-8, 21-9 with Harry Brewis.
Amy Lawson and Jade Brathwaite fought back from 18-21 down to win both of their doubles matches 21-12; 21-12.
The boy's doubles pairing of Ben Isaacs and Sam Stroudley remained consistent when they won the first doubles match 21-7;21-16 and 21-17;21-19 in the reversed doubles. Whilst there is still some work to do, the Oxfordshire's U15 squad demonstrated an overall improvement in their game and their determination to win. The presence of George Brewis was greatly missed and we wish him well in his recovery.
More success for Oxfordshire at Leicester, 6/12/09
Making the most of a favourable draw, Harry Brewis and Ben Isaacs played well to reach the semi-finals of the U15s Silver tournament at Leicester. They reached the semis without dropping a set having played some good attacking badminton and collected bronze medals for their efforts.
In the Bronze tournament a day earlier Sam Stroudley won through his first round his group so has now achieved his Bronze ranking - well done !
U15A Notch Up Another Win!
After a very busy weekend for many of them, the U15A team played with great passion to secure another superb Inter-County result, this time winning 15-5 against Warwickshire. In a sign of the growing confidence of this Oxfordshire squad, most matches were won in two games, with some really close and well fought battles when they were pushed to a third game. Despite two tennis competitions and a matchplay session the day before, Nick Grain summoned his remaining energy to secure wins in his singles and both boys doubles playing with Ollie Dalton - great work guys! Another clean sweep also for our dynamic duo Imogen and Edith Langford who won all their singles, doubles and mixed matches. Fantastic effort girls! Once again a great team effort with every player showing great commitment to play their very best and also to support their team mates on court. Well done everybody and thanks as always to the small army of parent helpers who made the Team Manager's job a little easier on the day! As the saying goes, we couldn't have done it without you!
Fantastic result Harry and Edith – Well done.
